Houston City Roundup: Official Notices, Health Alerts, and Traffic Advisories for March 6, 2026

Transportation and Infrastructure Updates
Effective March 2, 2026, Houston Public Works has officially implemented the 2026 edition of the Infrastructure Design Manual (IDM). This manual establishes the basic criteria for engineers to design infrastructure throughout the city. While the manual is now in effect, the city has instituted a 90-day design grace period. All public and private sector projects submitted for initial review after June 1, 2026, must fully comply with these updated standards. Additionally, new general requirements and standard construction specifications for Divisions 01 through 16 are now active.
Significant road closures are in effect today due to both infrastructure projects and major events. Total closures are scheduled for the westbound exit ramps of I-10 to Irvington Boulevard, North Main Street, and Shepherd Drive from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. In the downtown area, Hamilton, Pease, and Jefferson Streets remain closed for storm sewer installation and roadway construction, with a projected reopening date of March 20. Furthermore, Chartres Street is closed from Commerce to Runnels through late March.
Public Safety and Event Advisories
The Houston Police Department has launched its 42nd annual "March on Crime" (Lucha Contra El Crimen) program. Throughout the month of March, the city will emphasize crime prevention education and community engagement. Residents are encouraged to participate in local neighborhood meetings to learn about proactive safety measures and the latest crime prevention technology. The department has also announced the swearing-in of additional police cadets this week, bringing the total force to its highest level in city history.
Downtown commuters should prepare for significant street closures surrounding Daikin Park beginning today for the World Baseball Classic. Impacted areas include the 1600-1800 blocks of Texas and Congress Streets, the 300-500 blocks of Crawford and Hamilton Streets, and portions of Avenida De Las Americas. These closures include curb lanes and full lane reductions to accommodate event fencing and street festivals.
Health and Municipal Notices
The Houston Health Department is echoing a federal public health alert regarding a misbranded beef jerky product sold nationwide. The Punahele Jerky Company has issued an alert for its "beef crisps"—including Hawaiian style and spicy varieties—due to an undeclared soy lecithin allergen. Residents are advised to check their pantries for products with best-by dates of February 17, 2027, or earlier. Additionally, the department continues to monitor public health following a series of measles cases reported over the last year, urging residents to ensure they are up to date on MMR vaccinations.
The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) has set a deadline of 5:00 PM today, Friday, March 6, for the public to submit comments or request public hearings regarding the FY2025 Urbanized Area Formula project list. This includes funding for safety, security, and METROLift services. Finally, the City of Houston Municipal Courts Department reminds residents that a new modernized jury management system is now fully operational, streamlining the jury selection process for local citizens.
