Late-night fire prompts rapid response in northeast Houston

A woman was hospitalized after firefighters pulled her from a burning apartment building in northeast Houston early Monday, Feb. 16, 2026, as crews worked to contain a blaze that spread across multiple units and caused part of the structure to collapse.

The fire was reported around midnight at an apartment building on Legion Street near the Eastex Freeway. A District 19 fire chief returning from another call noticed smoke and flames and immediately requested additional resources. When firefighters arrived, four apartment units were burning.

Rescue operations and ongoing search

Firefighters removed a woman from one of the involved units. She was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to a hospital. Authorities had not released her condition by early morning.

Crews also conducted searches for another resident who was initially unaccounted for. As of the latest official update available Monday morning, no additional outcome had been released regarding that person.

Structural collapse and impact on pets

During the firefight, one of the units collapsed, adding complexity and risk to the response. Firefighters rescued a dog from inside the building and provided care at the scene. A witness later reported that the dog died after the rescue; officials did not independently confirm that account in available updates.

Dispute at the scene, cause still undetermined

As crews continued suppression and overhaul, a physical altercation occurred outside the scene. Video captured two men fighting, with one accusing the other of starting the fire. Fire officials did not confirm any such allegation, and no official cause was announced Monday morning.
