Widespread Downtown Closures for MLK Unity Parade; Expect Heavy Delays Near Smith St.

Overview: A Lighter Commute With a Downtown Exception
Today is Monday, January 19, 2026, and Houston celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day. While the citywide morning rush is significantly lighter than a typical Monday due to the federal holiday, commuters heading toward the city center should prepare for major disruptions. For the first time in three decades, the city's major parades have joined forces for the inaugural MLK Day Unity Parade, which will bring thousands of participants and widespread road closures to the Downtown district throughout the morning and early afternoon.
Downtown Alert: MLK Unity Parade Road Closures
The MLK Day Unity Parade is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m., but staging and production closures are already in effect. Drivers should avoid the area bounded by I-45, I-10, and I-69 if they do not have a specific destination Downtown. Key street closures include:
- Smith Street: East and west curb lanes are closed from 5:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. between Walker and Lamar. Full closures will occur near Rusk and Dallas starting at 7:00 a.m.
- McKinney and Walker Streets: Both streets are closed between Bagby and Louisiana until 3:00 p.m., with sections between Bagby and Smith remaining shut until 6:00 p.m. for post-event breakdown.
- Allen Parkway: Both inbound and outbound lanes between Shepherd and Smith are closed from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Inbound traffic is being redirected at Sabine toward Memorial Drive.
- Bagby Street: Northbound and southbound lanes between Dallas and McKinney are closed through early afternoon.
Public Transport: Free Rides and Weekday Service
METRO Houston has announced a unique schedule for today to support parade attendance. Unlike previous years, METRO is operating on a normal weekday schedule for local buses, METRORail, and Park & Ride services to ensure maximum accessibility. To encourage use of public transit, METRO is offering free rides on all local bus and rail lines to and from Downtown between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. However, be aware that METRORail lines, particularly the Red Line along Main Street, may experience delays as they cross parade-impacted intersections.
Ongoing Construction and Highway Outlook
Outside of the Downtown core, major construction projects continue to impact travel. The I-45 North Freeway expansion project (Segment 3) continues with lane restrictions on frontage roads near the I-10 interchange. Additionally, the I-610 West Loop at I-69 Southwest Freeway interchange remains a high-congestion zone. While no new major holiday closures were added, existing narrowed lanes and exit detours near the 610/69 junction are still in place. Commuters are advised to use the 610 South Loop or the Hardy Toll Road as alternatives to avoid the most congested segments of I-45 today.
