Sunday Ramp Closures and Downtown Event Detours: Houston Commute Report

Sunday Traffic Alert: Key Closures at Major Interchanges
Houston drivers can expect a mix of construction-related delays and special event detours this Sunday, March 8, 2026. The most significant impacts involve two major freeway interchanges that will remain restricted through the evening, requiring motorists to plan for alternate routes.
A total closure is currently in effect for the Interstate 45 Gulf Northbound connector ramp to Interstate 610 South Loop Westbound. This closure is scheduled to remain active until 9:00 PM tonight. Additionally, the Interstate 69 Southwest Southbound connector ramp to Interstate 45 Southbound is closed continuously until 8:00 PM. Travelers are advised to use the following detours:
- For IH-45 Northbound: Continue on IH-45 Northbound, take Exit 45 to SH-288, and then use the exit to IH-610.
- For IH-69 Southbound: Continue on IH-69 Southbound, take Exit 128B to SH-288 Southbound, and follow signs for IH-610 East to reach IH-45.
Near downtown, the I-10 White Oak Bayou elevation project continues to restrict the Interstate 10 Katy Westbound lanes between IH-45 and Studemont Street. Expect long-term lane reductions in this area as bridge demolition and elevation work proceed. Further south, the IH-610 Westbound exit ramp at Kirby Drive will be closed tonight from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM to facilitate egress for the RodeoHouston World's Championship Bar-B-Que Contest.
Downtown Special Events and Street Closures
Several special events are causing temporary street closures in the downtown and Fifth Ward areas this morning. The Poppy’s Run for Life event has resulted in the closure of Maury Street, Lyons Avenue, and McKee Street until approximately 10:30 AM. Concurrently, the Women’s Quarter Marathon is causing disruptions near West 18th Street through the mid-morning hours.
Daikin Park is also a focal point for traffic today as the World Baseball Classic continues. Commuters should avoid the 1600-1800 blocks of Texas and Congress, as well as portions of Crawford and Hamilton Streets, which are seeing significant curb lane closures for bus staging and security fencing.
Public Transport and Weather Conditions
METRO Houston has issued service alerts for several local bus routes due to these events. Routes 011 (Almeda/Lyons) and 026 (Long Point/Cavalcade) are currently on detour until 10:30 AM. Route 041 (Kirby/Polk) is also experiencing detours along West Dallas Street. Riders should check the METRO app for real-time schedule adjustments.
Finally, Houston is seeing light to moderate rain today with a 75% chance of precipitation. These damp conditions have already contributed to early morning incidents, including a major accident reported on Bingle Road. Drivers are urged to reduce speeds on wet pavement and watch for standing water in low-lying areas.
