Six injured in northeast Houston shootout during large trail ride gathering as police worked to disperse crowd

Shootout breaks out during effort to clear a large gathering
Six people were injured in a shootout Saturday night, January 31, 2026, during a large trail ride gathering in northeast Houston, as Houston police officers worked to disperse a crowd that had drawn hundreds of people to a strip-center parking lot in the 11300 block of Homestead Road.
The gunfire erupted around 8 p.m. in the back area of the shopping center after an altercation, investigators said. Officers were already in the area due to the size of the gathering and ongoing efforts to get people to leave when shots were fired and attendees scattered.
Victims include teenagers and young adults; two listed as critical
Authorities said six victims were struck by gunfire. Two were listed in critical condition, including a male believed to be about 20 years old and a male believed to be about 15 years old. Four others were reported in stable condition: a 16-year-old male, a 20-year-old female, a 20-year-old male and a 22-year-old female.
Three of the victims received initial aid at the scene from officers before being transported by Houston Fire Department crews. The other three reached hospitals by private vehicle, police said.
Investigation complicated by crowd size and multiple-caliber evidence
No suspects were immediately identified, and investigators indicated more than one shooter may have been involved. The number of people in the area at the time—described as hundreds—created challenges for investigators attempting to determine who fired and how many weapons were used.
Police continued interviewing witnesses and reviewing available evidence as the incident remained under investigation early Sunday.
Recurring safety concerns around large, informal gatherings
The shooting occurred in an area where residents have previously raised concerns about large gatherings that spill into parking lots and nearby streets, causing traffic congestion and restricting access for local drivers. Law enforcement frequently faces a difficult operational environment in such situations, balancing crowd control with the need to quickly identify threats when conflicts escalate.
What officials are asking from the public
- Anyone who recorded video from the scene is encouraged to preserve the original files and be prepared to share them with investigators.
- Witnesses who saw the altercation or the start of gunfire are urged to provide a clear timeline, including locations, vehicles and descriptions.
- People who left before police arrived are still considered potential witnesses and may have critical information about what occurred.
The investigation remained active Sunday, with police working to determine how the altercation began, how many shooters were involved and where those responsible fled.
