A Day of Inclusive Fun and Artistic Brilliance

Houston is alive with a diverse array of events this Thursday, March 5, 2026. Whether you are looking for an inclusive carnival experience, a night of Broadway-style musical theater, or a community-driven block party, the city offers something for everyone today.

Houston Rodeo: Sensory Friendly Day and Russell Dickerson

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo continues its run at NRG Park with a focus on inclusivity. Today is designated as Sensory Friendly Day. During the morning hours, select areas of the Carnival will feature minimal lights and sounds to provide a more comfortable environment for guests with sensory sensitivities. In addition to the carnival, families can catch the Houston Grand Opera’s "Opera to Go!" performance of The Velveteen Rabbit at 11:00 a.m. on the grounds. The evening concludes with a high-energy performance by country star Russell Dickerson, who takes the stage at NRG Stadium following the main rodeo competitions at approximately 9:00 p.m.

Curtains Up: Gatsby and English on Stage

Theater enthusiasts have exceptional choices tonight. The Great Gatsby continues its run at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. This Tony-winning musical brings F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel to life with a jazz-influenced score and stunning Roaring Twenties choreography. Over at the Alley Theatre, it is the final opportunity to see the critically acclaimed play English. This production, which explores the lives of four Iranians preparing for an English-language exam, concludes its run today. Additionally, the Alley is also staging The Importance of Being Earnest, offering a classic comedic experience for those in the mood for Oscar Wilde’s wit.

Community and Cinema: Mid Main and Zeal Reel

The Mid Main First Thursday Block Party kicks off at 6:00 p.m. along the Mid Main corridor. This monthly community event features local vendors, live music, and special promotions from neighborhood businesses, with proceeds tonight benefiting the Dr. Marnie Rose Foundation. For film lovers, the Zeal Reel 2026 Cinema Exposition & Soirée takes place at the historic Eldorado Ballroom from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. This unique event showcases a lineup of international one-minute films as part of a biannual micro-short competition, providing a fast-paced and creative look at global storytelling.

Art and Exhibitions

Art aficionados should head to the TWU East | West Galleries for the John Weinkein Juried Student Exhibition. An opening reception and awards ceremony will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., featuring a wide range of works from talented student artists and remarks from the year's guest juror. It is a perfect way to support the local art scene before heading out for a night on the town.
