Public Notice Roundup: Council Calls for HISD Transparency and Major 610 Closures
Houston City Council: Scrutiny Over HISD Closures and Main Street Planning
City Council offices are currently processing a formal request from Council Member Edward Pollard for Houston ISD Superintendent Mike Miles to appear before the council. The request follows the recent announcement of a proposal to close eight campuses and relocate four others, including several schools in District J. Families and local officials are seeking transparency regarding the sudden change in the district's plans, with the school board expected to vote on the closures by February 26. Council members have expressed concerns over the impact these closures will have on neighborhood stability and student commutes.
Additionally, the Economic Development Committee recently held a public session to review design guidelines for the Main Street Promenade. The proposed standards focus on outdoor dining enhancements and permanent infrastructure to support the city's pedestrian-friendly initiatives in the downtown district. Residents are encouraged to review the upcoming tax abatement proposals aimed at stimulating growth in these zones while ensuring equitable development across the city's core.
Traffic and Infrastructure Alerts: Weekend Highway Closures and Storm Sewer Work
Houston Public Works and Houston TranStar have issued several advisories for the weekend of Friday, February 20:
- IH-610 North Loop: Daily lane closures on the frontage roads between Wayside Drive and Liberty Road conclude at 3:00 p.m. today. Residents should expect normal traffic flow to resume in this area by the evening commute.
- IH-610 South Loop: A total westbound closure from Telephone Road to Broadway Street is scheduled to begin tonight, Friday, February 20, at 9:00 p.m. and will remain in effect until 5:00 a.m. Monday. Motorists should utilize alternate routes or follow the detour via IH-45 North to SH-288.
- Downtown Closures: Sections of Hamilton, Pease, and Jefferson Streets remain closed for storm sewer infrastructure installation. These closures are projected to stay in place through late March to accommodate roadway reconstruction.
- Outfall Repairs: Maintenance crews are currently active in the Westwood and Willow Meadows neighborhoods. Specifically, outfall repairs are underway at 10602 Bassoon Drive and 10130 Willowgrove Drive to mitigate flooding risks.
Public Health and Neighborhood Services
In observance of American Heart Month, the Houston Health Department and Harris County Public Health are urging residents to prioritize cardiovascular screenings and lifestyle assessments. Local health centers are providing educational resources on heart disease prevention throughout the month of February. Furthermore, Harris County Pets is offering a $40 spay and neuter service for the remainder of the month to help manage the local animal population.
City officials also remind residents of two major administrative updates now active for 2026:
- Heavy Trash Collection: The city has transitioned to a request-based system. Residents must now call 311 to schedule heavy trash pickups, which will be completed within five working days of the scheduled request. Each address is limited to four requests per year.
- Donation Box Ordinance: All textile and clothing donation boxes must now display an official City of Houston decal. These decals verify that the box is registered and compliant with city safety and transparency rules.
- Weather Advisory: A dense fog advisory is in effect for the Houston region through the morning hours of February 20. Drivers are advised to use low-beam headlights and maintain safe following distances.
