A top student art honor ahead of the 2026 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

Pasadena Independent School District senior Joshua Washington, a student at Pasadena Memorial High School, was named Grand Champion in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s 2026 School Art Program during an awards ceremony held at NRG Center on Feb. 15, 2026. The Grand Champion designation places Washington’s work at the top of the rodeo’s annual student art competition, one of the event’s best-known youth education initiatives.

The winning artwork and what it depicts

Washington earned the top award for a painting titled Between Boots and Moccasins. The piece portrays a visual exchange between two figures—one presented in Native American attire and the other in Western wear—framed as a symbolic dialogue about cultural connection and understanding.

How the School Art Program works

The School Art Program draws entries from students across the greater Houston area, spanning pre-K through 12th grade. For the 2026 competition, more than 4,300 entries were submitted from 97 public school districts and 54 private schools. From that larger pool, 90 artworks were selected for display in the Hayloft Gallery during the rodeo season and for sale at the program’s marquee fundraising event, the School Art Auction.

  • Displayed works: 90 selected student artworks are exhibited at the Hayloft Gallery during the rodeo.

  • Auction date: The School Art Auction is scheduled for March 15, 2026.

  • Student premiums: Participants whose work is auctioned can earn premiums of up to $40,000.

Reserve Grand Champion and other awards

Fort Bend ISD student Mingyi Li, a senior at Clements High School, was named Reserve Grand Champion for Head On, a colored-pencil work. Beyond the top two honors, the program also recognizes winners across multiple categories, with additional awards including class champions and a 3-D Premium Award selection.

Education funding context and recent auction results

The rodeo’s School Art Auction is part of a broader education fundraising framework tied to scholarships and youth programming. The rodeo’s education fund contribution for 2026 was reported at $30 million. In the prior year’s auction cycle, the combined total raised by the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion artworks reached $476,000, reflecting the event’s capacity to generate significant support for education initiatives alongside direct student premiums.

Washington’s Grand Champion selection positions his painting among the most prominent youth artworks presented during the 2026 rodeo season, ahead of the March 15 auction.

The March auction will determine the final sale totals for the 2026 Grand Champion and other selected student pieces, closing the competitive arc from classroom submissions to public exhibition and fundraising at NRG Park.
