Closures focus on the Brazos River crossing and adjacent ramps and frontage roads

Drivers on US-59/I-69 in Sugar Land are facing a new round of lane closures and traffic pattern changes tied to the multi-phase construction project at the Brazos River bridge. Transportation agencies and local officials are advising motorists to plan for delays, particularly during weekend work windows when crews complete traffic switches and lane reductions through the river crossing area.

The work is part of a project designed to extend the US-59/I-69 bridge over the Brazos River and relocate key structural elements farther from areas affected by riverbank erosion. The broader effort has been described as a months-long construction program, with recurring closures of main lanes, frontage roads and some entrance and exit ramps as construction moves from one phase to the next.

What is changing for drivers

Recent schedules have included full, temporary closures of both northbound and southbound main lanes within the project limits as part of a Phase 3 traffic switch. In addition to main-lane impacts, the project has also involved closures and restrictions on nearby frontage road access over the river, with detours routing drivers to alternate on- and off-ramps and nearby surface streets.

Officials have also flagged impacts around key access points for neighborhoods and destinations near the corridor, including the University Boulevard area, Riverbrook Drive and connections to parks near the Brazos River. In earlier project briefings, planners indicated that five general-purpose lanes in each direction are expected to remain open during much of the construction; however, periodic night and weekend closures are used to complete work that requires temporary shutdowns or major traffic shifts.

  • Expect intermittent closures of US-59/I-69 main lanes near the Brazos River bridge.
  • Prepare for frontage road access restrictions over the river, particularly in the northbound direction.
  • Watch for detours affecting access to University Boulevard, Riverbrook Drive and nearby park routes.
  • Allow additional travel time for congestion near the SH 99 and US-59 interchange during closure windows.

Why the project is underway

The bridge work is tied to erosion concerns along the Brazos River bank near the highway crossing. Local project materials describe the goal of moving the bridge abutment farther from areas vulnerable to future erosion while extending the bridge structure. The Brazos River turnaround in this area was previously closed in 2016 amid safety concerns connected to erosion conditions.

Drivers are being urged to expect delays, follow posted detours and use caution around work zones during active construction.

What drivers can do now

Motorists traveling between Sugar Land and Fort Bend County destinations are encouraged to check traffic conditions before departure, avoid peak commute periods when possible, and be prepared for last-minute changes to lane configurations near the river crossing. Agencies coordinating the work have indicated that schedules can shift due to field conditions and weather, making advance trip planning especially important during weekends scheduled for traffic switches.
