A weeklong tradition that predates the rodeo’s opening day

More than 2,000 trail riders on horseback—along with wagons and support crews—are traveling toward Houston as part of the annual lead-up to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, scheduled for March 2–22, 2026, at NRG Park. The trail rides are a long-running feature of the rodeo season and are designed to recreate historic journeys into the city, culminating in public events before the downtown parade.

The tradition dates to 1952, when a small group rode from Brenham to publicize the event. In the decades since, the rides have expanded into a statewide, multi-route convergence that brings organized groups into Houston on coordinated schedules.

How the trail rides are organized in 2026

The rodeo’s sanctioned trail ride program for 2026 includes 12 official rides. This year’s roster adds the True Western Trail Ride Association, a Brookshire-area group established in 2025 that is scheduled to ride roughly 89 miles with an estimated 150 riders. Organizers describe the addition as the first new official trail ride in more than 20 years.

Across all participating rides, the combined trek typically totals more than 1,000 miles when the separate routes are added together. Individual rides follow distinct paths with planned daytime travel, stops, and overnight camps, supported by volunteers and logistics teams responsible for animal care, safety, and equipment transport.

  • Official trail rides in 2026: 12
  • Estimated total participants annually: more than 2,000 riders
  • Key pre-parade gathering point: Memorial Park

Memorial Park camp and the downtown parade

Riders and wagons are scheduled to arrive through the week and converge at Memorial Park for a final camp. Rodeo programming lists Friday, Feb. 27, 2026, as an all-day trail rides event, when groups merge and camp ahead of the Downtown Rodeo Parade on Saturday, Feb. 28.

The trail rides function as a ceremonial opening to rodeo season, bringing horses and wagons into the city ahead of the parade route.

Salt Grass Trail Ride and the scale of participation

Among the best-known groups, the Salt Grass Trail Ride is recognized as the oldest and is widely described as the largest. Its 2026 schedule lists ride dates from Feb. 20 through parade day on Feb. 28, marking what the group identifies as its 75th annual ride.

While each ride operates independently, their shared destination and timing are designed to place trail riders in Houston in the final days before the rodeo’s opening, maintaining a public-facing tradition that blends transportation history, horsemanship, and community participation.
