Houston Traffic Overview: Wednesday, March 4, 2026

Houston commuters should prepare for a challenging drive today as several major construction projects and the ongoing Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo contribute to increased congestion across the metropolitan area. Officials from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) have warned that this week marks a period of exceptionally high traffic volume due to the convergence of the rodeo, early spring break travel, and multiple long-term highway elevation projects.

Major Highway Closures and Roadworks

Several significant closures are in effect today, particularly affecting the I-10 corridor and the I-610 East Loop. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes during the midday hours to avoid planned total ramp closures.

  • I-10 Katy Freeway (Westbound): Near the downtown area, two outside lanes remain closed between the I-45 Gulf/Hogan Street split and Studemont Street. This is part of the ongoing White Oak Bayou elevation project, which aims to raise the main lanes above the floodplain. Commuters should expect consistent delays through this stretch.
  • I-610 East Loop (Westbound) Exit Ramps: Between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM today, total closures are scheduled for the exit ramps to Wayside Drive, Wallisville Road, and McCarty Street/US-90 Alternate. Drivers needing to access these areas should use the Homestead or McCarty U-turns and follow posted detour signs.
  • I-10 Katy Frontage Road: Northbound frontage road lanes from Kimberley Lane to the Katy Freeway will be reduced between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM for maintenance.
  • US-59/I-69 Sugar Land: Construction activity near the Brazos River Bridge has entered a new phase this month. Northbound commuters from Sugar Land should prepare for modified lane patterns and heavy congestion during peak hours as crews work on critical erosion repairs near the bridge.

METRO Transit Alerts and Detours

Houston METRO has announced several detours today necessitated by local street construction and recent service modifications. Passengers relying on the following routes should check for updated arrival times:

  • Route 40 (Telephone / Heights): Currently detoured at the intersection of Polk and Chartres due to active construction.
  • Route 102 (Bush IAH): Expect minor delays and route adjustments near the airport corridor due to regional roadworks.
  • Route 25 (Richmond) & Route 28 (OST-Wayside): Both routes are facing detours at major intersections, including Wheeler at Emancipation and Old Spanish Trail at Scott Street.

Commuter Advice

With the Houston Rodeo in full swing at NRG Stadium, traffic in the South Loop and Medical Center areas will remain heavy throughout the afternoon and evening. TxDOT officials urge drivers to "know before you go" and allow at least an extra 20 to 30 minutes for cross-town travel. If possible, utilize the METRORail to reach the NRG area to bypass stadium-related gridlock.
