Two-site tournament opens with Michigan’s doubleheader sweep in Houston

The Houston-HCU Invitational opened in Houston on Friday, Feb. 13, with games split between Houston Christian University’s Husky Field and the University of Houston’s Cougar Softball Stadium. The event features multiple programs playing across both venues through the weekend.

In the day’s early results, Michigan began its weekend with back-to-back victories, defeating Pittsburgh 3-1 and host Houston Christian 6-1 at Husky Field. The Wolverines’ opening-day outcomes placed them at 6-1 overall after Friday’s doubleheader.

Michigan 3, Pittsburgh 1: early home runs provide separation

Michigan established its scoring early against Pittsburgh with two solo home runs in the first inning. Lauren Putz homered on the second pitch she saw, and Lilly Vallimont followed with a home run later in the frame. Pittsburgh’s lone run came on a solo home run in the fourth inning, but Michigan responded in the bottom half with a two-out RBI double from Avery Fantucci to restore a two-run cushion.

In the circle, Michigan’s Gabby Ellis earned the win in relief. She entered after Pittsburgh’s fourth-inning home run and finished the game without allowing an earned run, striking out five over the final 3.2 innings.

Michigan 6, Houston Christian 1: capitalizing on mistakes and controlling the game in the circle

Michigan’s second game of the day also began with early pressure, with runs aided by defensive miscues. The Wolverines scored in the first inning following an overthrow and added another run in the third inning after a leadoff triple by Jenissa Conway preceded a scoring play on a misplayed ball.

Michigan’s pitching performance in the nightcap was led by Kat Meyers, who recorded six strikeouts and worked five hitless innings in the win.

Host and field context: Houston Invitational schedule and early tournament shape

The tournament’s format includes coordinated scheduling between Houston Christian and the University of Houston. Houston Christian’s home slate at Husky Field began with a Friday tripleheader sequence involving Pittsburgh and Michigan, followed by additional matchups the next day.

Elsewhere in the invitational’s opening phase, the University of Houston hosted Pittsburgh on Thursday, Feb. 12, and won 6-3 after a four-run sixth inning.

  • Michigan opened 2-0 in Houston with wins over Pittsburgh and Houston Christian.
