Sunday Traffic Overview

Commuters and weekend travelers in Houston should prepare for several significant roadway disruptions today, Sunday, February 1, 2026. While the extreme weather conditions from earlier this week have subsided, a heavy schedule of planned construction and routine maintenance is set to affect major arteries, particularly around the downtown loop and the western corridors. Drivers are encouraged to plan for an additional 15 to 20 minutes of travel time when navigating the following areas.

Major Highway and Ramp Closures

The most substantial impact today involves the ongoing I-10 White Oak Bayou elevation project. Motorists heading westbound on the I-10 Katy Freeway will face total closures of both the exit and entrance ramps at Taylor Street. These closures are part of a long-term effort to raise the freeway and improve flood resiliency. Additionally, the westbound main lanes of I-10 from the I-45 interchange to Studemont Street are restricted to two outside lanes, which is expected to create bottlenecking throughout the afternoon.

  • IH-45 Gulf Freeway: The southbound connector ramp to the IH-610 South Loop is undergoing maintenance with a total closure scheduled from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM today. Drivers are advised to exit at Broadway Street and use the U-turn to access the northbound main lanes.
  • IH-69 Southwest: In Sugar Land, travelers will encounter two inside lanes closed on the southbound side from Riverbrook Drive to University Boulevard. This work is expected to conclude by 5:00 PM this evening.
  • US-90 (Crosby Freeway): Continuous closures remain in effect for the eastbound and westbound main lanes between FM 2100 (Old Beaumont Highway) and Lindstrom. These lanes are expected to reopen by 5:00 PM today, but significant rubbernecking delays are likely.

Public Transport Detours

METRO Houston has announced several service adjustments due to these construction zones. Commuters relying on public transit should be aware of the following detours:

  • Route 102 (Bush IAH Express): Significant detours are in place for the airport route due to the I-10 construction near the downtown corridor. Passengers should allow extra time for arrivals at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
  • Route 137 (Northshore Express): Eastbound service is currently detoured via Chartres Street and Chenevert Street.
  • Route 077 (Homestead): This route remains on a long-term detour through early March. Travelers should check the mobile app for specific temporary stop locations on Hartwick Road and Cheeves Drive.

Local Downtown Impacts

In the downtown district, local events will result in minor curb lane closures. The 700 block of Texas Avenue (between Louisiana and Milam) and the 500 block of Prairie Street (between Smith and Bagby) will see restrictions throughout the day to accommodate theater performances and local functions. While these are not total street closures, they may slow down local traffic near the Alley Theatre and the Wortham Theater Center.
