Houston Traffic Overview for Friday, February 20, 2026

Commuters in Houston should prepare for significant congestion today as several major infrastructure projects reach critical phases. The primary concern for the morning and afternoon rush remains the ongoing I-10 West elevation project, which has narrowed the freeway to just two lanes in each direction between the I-45 North interchange and Houston Avenue. This bottleneck is expected to cause heavy delays throughout the day, particularly for those heading into or out of the Downtown area.

Major Arterial Alerts and Roadworks

  • I-10 West/I-45 Interchange: Significant long-term closures are in effect. The I-45 Southbound direct connector to I-10 Westbound remains fully closed for reconstruction at a new elevated height. Additionally, the I-10 Eastbound connector to I-45 Northbound is closed and will not reopen until 2028. Motorists are advised to use the I-610 North Loop as a primary detour.
  • SH-249 (Tomball Parkway): Expect slow-moving traffic between FM-1960 and Perry Road. The inside lane in both directions is closed continuously until 5:00 PM today.
  • I-10 East Freeway: A westbound frontage road closure is scheduled between Lockwood Drive and Waco Street from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM today, impacting local access in the area.

Weekend Construction Kickoff (Starting 9:00 PM)

Commuters planning to be on the road late tonight should note several total closures beginning at 9:00 PM that will last through Monday morning:

  • I-10 Katy Freeway: Total closure of the eastbound main lanes from Antoine Drive to Houston Avenue. Traffic will be diverted to the I-610 West Loop and North Loop.
  • I-10 Eastbound Entrance: The entrance ramp from Taylor Street will be fully closed.
  • I-610 South Loop: Total closure of the westbound main lanes from Telephone Road to Broadway Street. Motorists should detour via I-45 Northbound to State Highway 288.

Public Transport and METRO Alerts

Houston METRO has announced several active detours due to localized construction. Routes 040 (Telephone/Heights) and 041 (Kirby/Polk) are currently detoured near the intersection of Emancipation and Polk Street. Additionally, Route 077 (Homestead) is facing detours on Cheeves at Annunciation that will remain in place through the end of the month. Riders on the 102 Bush IAH express should also monitor the METRO app for potential delays related to North Freeway construction.

Commuter Advice

With the weekend construction starting at 9:00 PM, drivers are encouraged to complete their commutes early or utilize the Hardy Toll Road or Sam Houston Tollway to bypass the inner-loop closures. If you are heading to the Museum District or Downtown for evening events, expect heavier-than-usual surface street traffic as drivers navigate around the I-10 lane restrictions.
