Commute Overview for Tuesday, February 3

Houston commuters should prepare for a mix of significant long-term construction closures and changing weather patterns today. While the morning begins with warm temperatures in the 60s and 70s, a cold front is expected to move through the region late this afternoon, bringing a 30% to 60% chance of showers. Drivers should plan for potentially slick roads during the evening rush hour as the front arrives, followed by a sharp drop in temperatures tonight.

Major Freeway Closures and Construction

The I-10 Katy Freeway remains a primary hotspot for delays due to the ongoing White Oak Bayou elevation project. Commuters traveling westbound toward downtown will face several restricted areas that are likely to cause heavy congestion:

  • I-10 Katy Westbound: Two outside main lanes are closed between IH-45 (Gulf/Hogan St) and Studemont Street. This is part of the bridge demolition and elevation work, and significant delays are expected throughout the day.
  • Taylor Street Ramps: Both the westbound entrance and exit ramps at Taylor Street are under total closure until further notice. Motorists are advised to continue to the Studemont Street exit and perform a U-turn to reach Taylor Street.
  • I-45 Southbound Connector: The connector ramp from I-45 North southbound to I-10 Katy westbound remains totally closed. This major closure is currently scheduled to remain in place through June 30, 2026.
  • SH-249 Tomball Parkway: One inside lane is closed continuously in both directions between FM-1960 and Perry Road due to ongoing construction.

Overnight and Local Roadwork

In addition to the primary freeway projects, several secondary closures will impact those traveling during the late evening or early morning hours:

  • I-10 at Waco Street: Expect total closures of the westbound exit and entrance ramps tonight from 8:00 PM until 5:00 AM Wednesday. Detours involve using the Gregg Street or Meadow Street exits.
  • I-10 at Beltway 8-East: One outside lane of I-10 westbound at the Beltway 8-East interchange is subject to overnight closures ending at 5:00 AM.
  • SH-288 (Lake Jackson Area): Expect three alternate lanes to be closed for nightly maintenance on the mainlanes and frontage roads between FM 2004 and SH 332.

METRO and Public Transit Alerts

Houston METRO reports several active detours and service alerts that may affect your Tuesday morning trip:

  • I-45 North HOV/HOT Lanes: The access and egress points at Quitman Street leading to and from the I-10 Katy Freeway are closed until further notice. However, the access points for White Oak Drive remain open.
  • Bus Route 077 (Homestead): This route is currently detoured on Cheeves at Annunciation due to construction; these adjustments are expected to last through March 2.
  • Bus Route 041 (Kirby/Polk): Detours are in place at the intersection of West Dallas Street and Montrose Boulevard.
  • Route 102 (Bush IAH): Passengers heading to George Bush Intercontinental Airport should allow extra time as Route 102 is currently detoured due to local construction.
