Major I-10 Eastbound Closure Near Downtown; New METRO Hobby Service Launches

Significant Weekend Closure on I-10 Katy Freeway

Houston commuters face a challenging Sunday as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) continues a total closure of the eastbound mainlanes of the I-10 Katy Freeway. The shutdown, which began on Friday evening, will remain in effect until 5:00 a.m. Monday, February 23. The closure spans from Shepherd Drive to Houston Avenue, requiring all through-traffic to utilize a heavy detour. This work is part of an essential repair project for the Houston Avenue Bridge, which has reached a critical maintenance state after being struck by oversized loads dozens of times over the last year.

Widespread Roadworks and Ramp Closures

Beyond the mainlane closure, several key connectors and local bridges are inaccessible today. Drivers should be aware of the following specific alerts:

  • I-610 West Loop Connectors: The ramps from the West Loop northbound and southbound to I-10 Eastbound are completely closed.
  • Houston Avenue Bridge: The bridge itself is closed to all traffic in both directions at the I-10 interchange.
  • I-45 Interchange: The northbound I-45 connector ramp to the I-610 South Loop westbound is closed until Monday morning.
  • Long-term Lane Reductions: On the westbound side of I-10, the freeway remains narrowed to only two lanes between I-45 and Houston Avenue, a condition expected to persist through mid-2026.

Woodland Heights residents and those traveling near the central business district should expect heavy congestion on surface streets as motorists seek alternate paths around the construction zones.

METRO Launches New Service and Schedule Changes

Today marks a major update for public transit users in the Greater Houston area. Sunday, February 22, is the official launch date for the new Route 500 Downtown Direct, providing a streamlined connection between Hobby Airport and Downtown. This service is part of the city’s early ramp-up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with buses scheduled to run every 30 minutes.

Additionally, a comprehensive set of schedule and route modifications for various local bus and Park & Ride routes takes effect today. Passengers are encouraged to check their specific lines for timing adjustments. For those utilizing the rail system, the METRORail Red Line is maintaining a high 6-minute frequency today to assist with Sunday travel and mitigate the impact of the freeway closures.

Commuter Advice

To avoid the heaviest delays, drivers heading toward downtown from the west should detour via the I-610 North Loop to I-45 Southbound. Those traveling from the south can utilize Highway 288 or the I-610 South Loop to bypass the I-10/I-45 bottleneck. Commuters should allow at least 30 minutes of additional travel time for any trips crossing the northern side of the downtown loop.
