Two locations set to shut down in April

Kroger plans to close two Houston-area grocery stores on April 10, 2026, a move the company has described as part of a broader effort to run more efficiently and support its long-term business health. The affected locations are the Kroger in the Heights at 239 W. 20th St. and the Klein Crossing-area store in Spring at 6060 FM 2920 Rd.

The company has said employees impacted by the closures will be offered the opportunity to transfer to other Kroger locations.

Part of a wider store-footprint review

The two Houston-area closures come amid a larger store review Kroger outlined in mid-2025, when it disclosed plans to close approximately 60 stores nationwide over an 18-month period. In public filings and earnings-related communications, Kroger said the closures were expected to provide a modest financial benefit and that savings would be reinvested into the customer experience, while maintaining that workers would be offered roles at other locations.

While Kroger has not publicly provided a comprehensive list of stores scheduled to close nationwide, the Houston region has seen a series of confirmed shutdowns over the past year. Two additional Houston-area stores—at 2300 Gessner Road and 9325 Katy Freeway—were previously scheduled to close in late September 2025. A separate Houston location on Veterans Memorial Drive also closed in November 2025, and a Dickinson store on the Gulf Freeway closed in June 2025.

What the closures mean for customers and neighborhoods

The April closures will require shoppers in the Heights and parts of Spring to shift to nearby supermarkets, including other Kroger stores and competing chains. For many residents, store proximity matters not only for weekly grocery trips but also for pharmacy access, prepared foods, and fuel points or loyalty programs.

Retail analysts often view targeted store closures as an attempt to concentrate staffing, inventory and capital spending into higher-performing locations. For customers, that can translate into fewer neighborhood options but potentially increased investment in remaining stores and expanded digital fulfillment capacity.

Key facts at a glance

What to watch next

Kroger’s broader store-closure plan has been presented as a nationwide, phased effort rather than a single-market pullback. In Houston, the practical impact will hinge on how the company reallocates staffing, services and capital investment to nearby stores, and whether additional closures or remodel plans emerge in 2026.
