Early Morning Road Reopenings and Major Arteries

Commuters heading into the Houston city center this morning will find a welcome relief on the I-10 East Freeway. Following a weekend of intensive bridge repairs at Houston Avenue, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) confirmed that all eastbound mainlanes have reopened ahead of schedule. While initially planned to stay closed until 5:00 AM today, crews completed the work late Sunday, clearing a major hurdle for the Monday rush hour.

However, significant long-term disruptions remain in effect. Drivers should be aware that I-10 Westbound continues to be reduced to just two lanes between the I-45 North interchange and Houston Avenue. This narrowing is part of the White Oak Bayou elevation project and is expected to remain in place through mid-2026. Additionally, the I-45 Southbound direct connector to I-10 Westbound remains fully closed for reconstruction.

Overnight Closures and Real-Time Incidents

Several major overnight construction projects are scheduled to clear just as the peak commute begins. Commuters should verify that the following routes have fully reopened as planned:

  • Washburn Tunnel: Scheduled to reopen in both directions at 6:00 AM following overnight maintenance.
  • Beltway 8-East: The Eastbound and Westbound frontage roads at Greenshadow were slated for total closure until 6:00 AM.
  • I-610 South Loop: Westbound lanes from Telephone Road to Broadway Street and the I-45 Gulf Northbound connector were scheduled to reopen at 5:00 AM.
  • I-69 Southbound: Construction in Sugar Land between University Boulevard and Riverbrook Drive was expected to conclude by 5:00 AM.

Real-time reports from Houston TranStar indicate several major accidents occurred in the early hours of Monday, which may cause residual delays. Major incidents were reported at Aldine Westfield Road at Richey Road, Chimney Rock Road at Westpark Drive, and along Cullen Boulevard. While most early-morning stalls, including a vehicle fire on US-90 Alt, have been cleared, commuters should expect heavier-than-normal congestion near these sites as traffic volumes increase.

Public Transport and METRO Updates

Houston METRO riders should note that a new set of service modifications went into effect yesterday, Sunday, February 22. These changes include route and schedule adjustments for several local bus routes and Park & Ride services to improve peak-hour frequency. Specifically, Route 102 (Bush IAH) continues to experience detours due to ongoing construction, and the I-45 North HOV/HOT access points at Quitman remain closed until further notice. Commuters are encouraged to check the RideMETRO app for real-time bus tracking and any additional Monday morning cancellations.
