New Draft FEMA Floodplain Maps Released

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has issued new draft floodplain maps for Harris County as of February 11, 2026. These updated maps reflect a significant expansion of the 100-year floodplain, incorporating updated rainfall data and lessons learned from major weather events such as Hurricane Harvey. Experts note that the mapping reflects a roughly 30% increase in projected rainfall rates. While these maps are currently in a draft phase and do not yet trigger immediate changes to flood insurance requirements or building regulations, officials are urging residents to review the expanded risk areas. A public-friendly online map viewer is scheduled for launch by the Harris County Flood Control District next week to assist property owners in determining their potential risk status.

Weekend Road Closure Notice: Rodeo Houston Preparations

In preparation for the upcoming Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo events, the Mayor’s Office of Special Events has announced full street closures beginning at midnight on Friday, February 13, 2026. Motorists should expect significant delays and are advised to plan alternate routes in the following areas:

  • San Jacinto Street between Pease and Pierce Street.
  • San Jacinto Street between Webster and Pierce Street.
  • Fannin Street from Jefferson to Pierce Street.

Full closures will remain in effect through early Saturday morning, with partial closures and rolling traffic impacts expected throughout the weekend as infrastructure for the trail ride and parade is staged near Hermann Square.

Park and Trail Service Updates

Several municipal facilities and recreation areas are currently under repair or closed for safety improvements as of Friday, February 13:

  • Buffalo Bayou Trail: The section of the trail near Downtown remains closed to address a high-risk blind spot. Detour signs are posted for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • MKT Trail: The Hogan Street Pedestrian Bridge rehabilitation continues through the spring. The trail directly beneath the bridge remains closed to ensure public safety during the full reconstruction of the bridge structure.
  • DeZavala Community Center: This facility is currently closed until further notice due to emergency water leak repairs.
  • Emancipation Cultural Center: The outdoor grounds and cultural center remain closed for extensive renovations, with a projected reopening date of June 30, 2026.
