Attempted robbery reported after victim left a gun range

Houston police are investigating a shooting tied to an attempted “jugging” robbery in southwest Houston after a man was followed from a gun range and confronted near his destination. Officers responded Tuesday, February 10, 2026, to reports of gunfire in the 5300 block of Rampart Street, an area described by authorities as near South Gessner.

Investigators said the victim had recently departed a nearby gun range and was driving home when three suspects allegedly followed his vehicle. Police described the encounter as an attempted robbery focused on a bag containing firearms.

Police say three suspects confronted the victim and grabbed a bag containing guns

Authorities said the suspects approached the victim and took hold of a bag that contained guns. Police also said the victim was armed with additional firearms. A gunfight then occurred, involving multiple weapons, and one suspect was shot in the chin area.

Houston police stated the wounded suspect was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive. No other injuries were reported at the scene.

Police have not released the names of the victim or the suspects, and no arrests had been announced in initial updates.

Two suspects fled; investigators work to establish the sequence of events

Two additional suspects left the scene after the shooting. In one account provided by police, the remaining suspects fled in a vehicle. In another description, authorities said the suspects abandoned a car at the scene and ran before officers arrived. Investigators have not publicly reconciled the differing details and said the case remains under investigation.

Authorities have not announced whether any firearms involved in the incident were recovered. Police also have not stated whether surveillance video, license plate information, or other evidence has been developed to identify the outstanding suspects.

What “jugging” typically involves and why gun ranges can be targeted

Police in Houston and other large metro areas use the term “jugging” to describe thefts or robberies in which suspects watch potential targets, follow them from a location where valuables may be present, and then confront them at a secondary location such as a parking lot or residence.

  • In this case, investigators say the suspected motive was access to firearms transported after a gun-range visit.

  • The incident underscores the risks that can emerge when suspects track targets from routine activities and attempt theft after the target leaves the original location.

Status of the investigation

As of the latest police updates, the suspect who was shot remained hospitalized and was expected to survive. The other suspects had not been located publicly, and charges had not been announced. Police said investigators continued collecting evidence and working to determine the precise sequence of events leading up to the exchange of gunfire.
