Crash reported late night near Chenevert and Tuam

A traffic crash involving a Houston Police Department patrol vehicle in Midtown left four people hospitalized late Sunday night, including two on-duty officers, police said.

The collision was reported at about 10:45–10:50 p.m. near the intersection of Chenevert Street and Tuam Street, just south of downtown. Police said the officers were traveling north on Chenevert in a marked unit when a civilian vehicle traveling west on Tuam entered the intersection without stopping.

Right-of-way and initial findings

Police said Tuam is controlled by stop signs at the intersection, while Chenevert is not, giving the patrol vehicle the right-of-way as it moved through. The civilian vehicle struck the police unit in the intersection, according to the department’s initial account.

Video and photos from the scene showed both vehicles with significant front-end damage and deployed airbags. Police characterized the incident as a major crash scene but did not report any life-threatening injuries at the time of the initial briefing.

Injuries and hospital transport

Police said the two officers and two occupants of the civilian vehicle were transported to Memorial Hermann for evaluation and treatment. All four were reported to be in stable condition, with injuries described as non-critical.

Authorities did not immediately release the names or ages of those involved, and no further medical updates were provided during the initial public statements.

Alcohol admissions under review; charges not immediately announced

Police said two men were in the civilian vehicle. Investigators also reported that the men told officers at the scene they had been drinking. Police did not announce results from any sobriety testing or provide details on whether blood draws were requested or completed.

As of the initial information released, police had not confirmed whether citations or criminal charges would be filed. The department indicated the crash remained under investigation.

What investigators typically examine in an officer-involved crash

In addition to determining right-of-way and whether a traffic control device was violated, officer-involved collisions are generally reviewed for factors such as vehicle speed, roadway conditions, visibility, and whether emergency equipment (lights and sirens) was activated. Police did not publicly specify whether the patrol unit was operating in an emergency mode at the time of the crash.
