Houston Grand Opera earns third career Grammy, winning Best Opera Recording for Jake Heggie’s Intelligence

A Grammy milestone for Houston’s opera company
Houston Grand Opera has won the third Grammy Award in the company’s history, taking the recording industry’s top U.S. honor in the Best Opera Recording category for Intelligence. The award was announced Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026, as part of the annual Grammy Awards presented in Los Angeles.
The win adds to earlier Grammy victories associated with the company: Porgy and Bess (1978) and Nixon in China (1989). With Intelligence, the company returned to the Grammy winner’s circle after decades without a victory in the category.
What “Intelligence” is, and how the recording was made
Intelligence is a company-commissioned opera by composer Jake Heggie and librettist Gene Scheer, created in collaboration with director and choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar. The recording recognized by the Recording Academy was captured live during the opera’s world-premiere performances at Houston’s Wortham Theater Center in fall 2023.
The album was released on Aug. 29, 2025. The release also marked a recording milestone for the company: Intelligence was positioned as the first title issued through a new Houston Grand Opera label initiative created with the London Symphony Orchestra’s LSO Live, under a distribution partnership announced in 2025.
Artists and production credits behind the Grammy-winning album
The Grammy-winning recording features the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra conducted by Kwamé Ryan. Key cast members include soprano Janai Brugger and mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton in leading roles, with additional performers including J’Nai Bridges, Michael Mayes, Caitlin Lynch, Nicholas Newton and Joshua Blue.
The stage production incorporated collaboration with the dance group Urban Bush Women, reflecting the work’s multidisciplinary design as presented in Houston and preserved in the live recording.

Context: a renewed focus on recording and distribution
The Grammy arrives amid an expanded push by Houston Grand Opera into commercial audio releases. In addition to the Intelligence album, the company has announced plans for further recordings, including titles drawn from its performance history and more recent productions, as part of a broader strategy to distribute performances beyond the theater.
Houston Grand Opera’s latest Grammy win recognizes a live Houston world premiere transformed into an award-winning commercial recording.
The result cements Intelligence as both a major recent commission for the company and a nationally recognized recording achievement, while extending Houston Grand Opera’s Grammy history into a third distinct era of award-winning work.
