Morning Commute Overview for Monday, February 2, 2026

Houston drivers should prepare for a challenging start to the week as several major infrastructure projects enter critical phases today, February 2, 2026. While the regional transit system has largely recovered from the recent winter weather, significant lane reductions and ramp closures remain in effect on the city's most heavily traveled arteries, particularly near the downtown loop and the Heights.

Major Construction Hotspots: I-10 and I-45

The most significant impact for Westbound commuters is the ongoing I-10 White Oak Bayou elevation project. TxDOT has confirmed that two outside main lanes remain closed on Westbound I-10 from IH-45 (Hogan St) to Studemont Street. This long-term project aims to raise the freeway to prevent flooding, but it continues to cause substantial bottlenecks during peak hours. Additionally, the Westbound exit ramp to Taylor Street is completely closed; drivers are advised to continue to the Studemont exit and perform a U-turn.

On I-45, multiple frontage road closures are expected to disrupt local traffic in the Lockwood area. The Northbound Frontage Road from Lockwood to Dumble Street is closed continuously until the end of the week. For those using the Gulf Freeway, the Southbound connector ramp to the IH-610 South Loop will undergo a total closure today between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Motorists should detour by exiting Broadway Street and utilizing the U-turn to access Northbound IH-45 before merging onto the South Loop.

Surface Street and Montrose Restrictions

The Montrose Boulevard Improvement Project continues to restrict mobility in the Inner Loop. Montrose Boulevard remains reduced to a single lane in each direction between West Clay Street and Allen Parkway. While driveway access to local businesses is being maintained, heavy delays are expected at the Allen Parkway intersection throughout the day.

METRO Transit and Public Transport Updates

METRO Houston has reported several active detours due to localized construction projects. Commuters using the following routes should allow for extra travel time:

  • Route 77 (Homestead): A long-term detour is in effect on Cheeves at Annunciation, which is scheduled to last through early March.
  • Route 40 (Telephone / Heights): Northbound service is currently detoured via Polk Street.
  • Route 41 (Kirby / Polk): Detours are active near the intersection of West Dallas and Montrose Boulevard.
  • HOV/HOT Lanes: The access points at Quitman Street connecting to the I-10 Katy Freeway remain closed until further notice, affecting inbound morning commuters from the North Freeway.

Airport and Travel Reminders

For those heading to George Bush Intercontinental or Hobby Airport, officials remind travelers that as of yesterday, February 1, the TSA has implemented a new $45 verification fee for passengers without a Real ID or acceptable alternative identification. Travelers are encouraged to check their documentation before arriving at security checkpoints to avoid unexpected costs or delays.
