I-10 East Freeway Traffic Advisory: Emergency Sinkhole Repairs

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and Houston Public Works have issued an urgent traffic advisory for the East Freeway (I-10) near Federal Road. A massive sinkhole, triggered by a substantial water main break, has forced the closure of all outbound lanes. Repair crews are currently working to stabilize the underlying infrastructure, a process expected to continue through Thursday, February 5, 2026. Motorists are strongly urged to avoid the area and utilize alternate routes as significant delays are anticipated throughout the day.

Municipal Governance: Planning and Housing Committee Meetings

City officials have scheduled several high-priority meetings today, Thursday, February 5, to address urban development and community welfare. These sessions are open to the public and provide a platform for civic engagement.

  • Houston Planning Commission: The commission will hold its regular meeting at 2:30 p.m. at the City Hall Annex Council Chamber, located at 900 Bagby Street. The agenda includes the review of various subdivision and development plats. Residents may attend in person or view the proceedings via the municipal television channel, HTV.
  • Housing and Community Affairs Committee: City Council members are convening today for a session focused on local infrastructure projects and affordable housing initiatives. This meeting is expected to detail upcoming investments in neighborhood revitalization and residential support programs.

Public Works: Scheduled Nightly Road Closures

In addition to emergency repairs, Houston TranStar has announced several scheduled closures for the evening of Thursday, February 5, to facilitate ongoing maintenance and construction:

  • IH-10 Eastbound Connector to IH-610 East Loop: A total closure is scheduled nightly from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Traffic will be detoured to Clinton Drive to access the northbound loop.
  • IH-10 Westbound Exit to Lockwood Drive: This exit ramp will undergo a nightly total closure starting at 8:00 p.m.
  • IH-10 Westbound Exit to Heights Boulevard: An overnight closure is planned from 10:00 p.m. Thursday until 5:00 a.m. Friday morning.
  • IH-10 Westbound Frontage Road: The stretch between Studemont Street and Arlington Street will be closed nightly from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
