Case expands from state court to federal prosecution

An 18-year-old accused in the killing of a 61-year-old woman in Houston’s Heights neighborhood is now facing a parallel federal case, adding carjacking and firearms allegations to an already pending state capital murder prosecution.

The defendant, Darius Dewayne Hall, remains in custody after a Harris County judge ordered him held without bond on the state capital murder charge. Separate state allegations also include evading arrest with a vehicle and tampering with physical evidence.

What investigators say happened in the Heights

Investigators say Marietta Allison, an Austin resident, was shot around midnight on Saturday, March 7, 2026, near West 20th Street and Lawrence Street. Police have described the encounter as an attempted robbery that escalated when a masked suspect approached Allison as she walked near an apartment complex. Authorities say she was shot in the neck and her vehicle was taken.

Emergency responders transported Allison to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Pursuit, crash, and standoff

Police say officers located the stolen vehicle roughly 45 minutes after the shooting and pursued it for about 10 miles before it crashed near the Southwest Freeway feeder at Buffalo Speedway. Investigators say the suspect then ran and entered a vacant townhome or apartment unit, where an hours-long standoff unfolded. The standoff ended with the suspect’s surrender and arrest by SWAT officers.

  • Location of shooting: near West 20th Street and Lawrence Street in the Heights
  • Vehicle involved: a 2019 Toyota Highlander reported stolen from the victim
  • Arrest sequence: pursuit, crash, foot chase, then standoff in a vacant unit

What was said in court

In state court proceedings, prosecutors told the judge that Hall admitted he fled from police and acknowledged being in the vehicle. Prosecutors also said he denied involvement in the shooting itself. Court records reflect additional state charges tied to the pursuit and alleged evidence disposal.

Under the U.S. legal system, a criminal complaint, indictment, or charge is an accusation and does not establish guilt. Defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

Federal charges: why they matter

Federal prosecutors have filed carjacking and firearms charges connected to the same sequence of events, creating two tracks of prosecution—state and federal—arising from a single alleged incident. In practice, federal carjacking and firearms counts can carry severe sentencing exposure, including lengthy mandatory penalties on certain gun allegations if proven.

The federal case is expected to focus on the alleged taking of the vehicle by force and the use of a firearm during a violent crime, while the state case centers on the homicide and related conduct during the flight from police.

Victim’s visit to Houston

Authorities and friends have said Allison was in Houston to support a friend undergoing chemotherapy treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Investigators say the shooting occurred after she dropped her friend near an apartment building and parked nearby.

Hall’s next court settings in the state case are expected to address the capital murder charge and related allegations, while the federal proceedings move forward on the newly filed complaint.
