Family seeks answers after fatal Northwest Houston shooting leaves woman dead and children unharmed inside apartment

What happened
A fatal shooting in northwest Houston has left a family seeking answers as investigators work to identify those responsible. Police were called at about 8 p.m. Friday to the 6200 block of W. Tidwell Road near Lumberdale Road, where they found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound inside an apartment.
The woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died. Three children—a 6-year-old boy, a 6-year-old girl and an 8-year-old girl—were found inside the apartment and were not injured. Police said the children were removed safely by a rescue unit.
Conflicting early details complicate the case
Investigators described the scene as difficult to sort out because initial information did not clearly establish whether the shooting occurred inside the apartment or whether shots were fired into the unit from outside. Police reported finding shell casings in the parking lot, a detail that can indicate gunfire occurred outside; however, officers also received information suggesting the gunfire happened inside.
As of early Sunday, police had not announced an arrest. Investigators also had not publicly released the victim’s name.
Family describes victim as sister and says children were not hers
In interviews given after the shooting, a woman who identified herself as the victim’s sister said the victim was Shyta Campbell. She said the last conversation she had with her sister took place about a week before the shooting. The sister also said the children who were inside the apartment at the time were not Campbell’s and that Campbell did not live in that specific apartment.
What investigators say they know so far
Police said multiple people were arguing outside an apartment unit where the victim was located. Investigators said the dispute moved toward the front door, and at some point a woman was shot. Officers said the three children inside were not harmed.
What remains unknown
- Who fired the shots and where the shooter was positioned when the gunfire occurred.
- Whether the gunfire came from inside the apartment, outside the building, or involved movement between both areas.
- The identities of those involved in the argument and whether the shooting stemmed directly from that confrontation.
Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact Houston police as the investigation continues.
