A long-running Houston brand adds a major new dining room at a high-traffic redevelopment

El Tiempo Cantina has opened a new Houston location at POST Houston, a large adaptive reuse project in the former Barbara Jordan Post Office near downtown and the Theater District. The opening marks the chain’s 18th location in the Houston area and places the restaurant next to one of the development’s key entertainment anchors, 713 Music Hall.

The POST location occupies a 7,500-square-foot space and is designed for 230 guests. The restaurant includes a full bar and multiple private dining rooms, adding capacity for group events and pre- or post-show traffic tied to the venue’s programming and broader visitor activity in the district.

POST Houston has positioned itself as a destination for dining and events, a combination that can support both weekday business and weekend crowds. For a legacy Tex-Mex brand, proximity to major attractions also creates a path to reaching visitors who may not typically travel to neighborhood locations.

Brand background: a Houston Tex-Mex lineage

The restaurant’s roots are closely tied to the Laurenzo family, a well-known name in Houston’s Tex-Mex history. El Tiempo originated after members of the family opened the first El Tiempo Cantina on Richmond Avenue in the late 1990s, following the decline of the Ninfa’s restaurant brand during that period. Over time, El Tiempo became associated locally with staples such as mesquite-grilled fajitas, enchilada plates, chile con queso, and margaritas.

Regional expansion remains uneven

While the chain has continued to add units in the Houston area, its recent attempt to expand to the Dallas–Fort Worth region was short-lived. A location opened at Choctaw Stadium in Arlington and later closed about a year after launching, underscoring the challenges of translating a Houston-centered concept to a different regional dining landscape.

With a large dining room, private-event space, and a downtown address tied to an entertainment hub, the POST opening is positioned as a high-visibility addition to El Tiempo’s Houston portfolio.
