Arrest follows bomb-threat response at Cypress home

A Cypress man was arrested this week after authorities said a caller reported a plan to detonate explosive devices and carry out a mass shooting in northwest Harris County.

Deputies with the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office responded on March 9, 2026, to the 21900 block of Bronze Leaf Drive after receiving a bomb-threat call. Investigators said the caller claimed he intended to set off explosives and conduct a mass shooting. Authorities later indicated that court records described an alleged plan to bomb U.S. Highway 290.

What investigators say was recovered

Authorities said deputies detained Jeremiah Chavez at the scene. After searching the residence, investigators reported finding an AR-style rifle, ammunition, and what they described as bomb-making components. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad assisted with the safe removal of materials from the home.

No injuries were reported in connection with the incident, and authorities did not announce that any explosive device had been detonated.

Officials described the case as an ongoing investigation and said additional details were not immediately available at the time of booking.

Charge filed and what it generally involves under Texas law

Chavez was booked into the Harris County Jail and charged with unlawful possession of components of explosives, a felony offense under Texas law. The statute criminalizes possession of certain explosive components under circumstances that meet defined legal thresholds, and cases are typically evaluated based on the nature of the materials, surrounding circumstances, and proof of intent or unlawful purpose as required by the specific provision applied.

Authorities did not publicly release, in initial statements, a detailed inventory of the recovered components or an explanation of how investigators connected the seized materials to an alleged plan targeting Highway 290.

What remains unanswered

As of the public updates provided early in the case, officials had not announced:

  • whether additional charges related to threats or weapons would be filed;
  • the suspect’s bond status or next court setting;
  • the timeframe or location of any alleged intended attack beyond references to a Cypress neighborhood and Highway 290;
  • whether investigators believe any other person was involved.

Authorities said the investigation remained active, and further information was expected to emerge through court proceedings and additional law-enforcement filings.
