Traffic Alert: Brine Trucks and Ongoing Construction Impacting Houston Friday Commute

Houston commuters should prepare for a busier-than-average Friday as both winter weather preparations and significant long-term construction projects affect major arteries. While the primary impact of Winter Storm Fern is expected over the weekend, official state responses began early this morning, potentially slowing down travel on the city's busiest loops.

Pre-Treatment Convoys on Major Loops

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) began a massive effort to pre-treat local roads today, Friday, January 23. Starting at 8:00 AM, brine convoys were deployed to spray a salt-and-water solution on major freeways and overpasses. Motorists should be particularly cautious of slow-moving convoys and should allow extra space for crews on the following routes:

  • Interstate 10 (Katy Freeway): Crews are focusing on main lanes and connector ramps between the 610 Loop and Downtown.
  • IH-610 Loop: Brine application is occurring across both the North and West loops to prevent early ice formation on elevated structures.
  • US-290 (Northwest Freeway): High-priority ramps and bridges are being treated throughout the morning to prepare for a drop in temperatures.

Significant Roadworks and Long-term Closures

Several critical closures remain in effect or will begin this evening, further complicating the Friday drive:

  • I-10 Katy Freeway: There are significant lane reductions westbound between I-45 and Studemont Street. Both the Taylor Street entrance and exit ramps remain totally closed until further notice, requiring motorists to detour to Studemont or Houston Avenue.
  • I-69 Eastex Freeway: Commuters heading out late tonight should be aware of a total closure on the northbound lanes from Cavalcade Street to the I-610 North Loop. This closure begins at 9:00 PM tonight and will last through Monday morning.
  • IH-610 East Loop: Expect delays between SH-225 and Lawndale, where two alternate lanes are closed today until 3:00 PM for maintenance.
  • I-45 North: The southbound connector ramp to I-10 Westbound remains closed. Drivers are advised to use the I-610 West Loop as an alternate route.

Public Transport and Transit Alerts

METRO Houston reports that most bus and rail services are running on schedule this morning, though the I-45 North HOV/HOT lane access at Quitman Street to and from the I-10 Katy Freeway remains closed until further notice. METRO is monitoring the incoming winter weather, and while no service interruptions have been announced for today, commuters should stay alert for potential modifications if conditions deteriorate this evening.

Safety Recommendations

Though the flight and road risk is currently rated as low-to-moderate for the morning, local officials urge residents to complete essential travel before sunset. Ensure your vehicle has adequate fuel and tire pressure, as sudden temperature drops can affect both. Check your route before leaving, as minor stalls—like those reported earlier this morning on I-69 Southwest and I-10 Westbound—can cause quick backups during the afternoon rush.
